Its a good post Ron, and the point are well taken. I think you are more driven towards the philosophy of how to live, whereas I tend to think for example Red Dog is addressing facts and perceptions.
Given that most people, in normal human existance, endure pain and suffering to some degree more or less, then I would have to say the cards are the cards. Choices aside, as in the example of your brother, life indeed is a combination of choices/non-choices/actions/consequences, all in one dynamic called a lifetime.
We live the here and now, but we also recognize what brought us to a particular point. That would include for example the statement from RD the core brotherhood is dead. We carry on, but we understand what the deal is that brought us to this point.
SO, in the final analysis, one group of statements is no more right or wrong than the other; they compliment each other, agreed?.
