My only suggestion is to protect kids first and protect yourself like 1A if you will. Mean people are mean for a very good reason, so dont get bit by being nice.
Last thing, and it may sound very stupid to today, but if a person has anything at all that is of value to them, they are wise to march to the bank and CC companies and clean out/close out and get a storage unit the same day and move their stuff where a mean person cant get their hands on it.
