Personal observation/opinion: I don't know exactly when or how it happened, but as a nation we are SO divided (50/50) on most every political issue. Any conflict that arises - regardless of administration or party can be expected to be contested by half of our country. What are we fighting for? Yeah, it's fine to run off a tyrant (last seen at his own neck-tie party), but if you honestly believe that at least some of this is not about oil - I'd like to have $50 worth of whatever you're smokin'. I don't mean to sound heartless or inhuman, but it's time we became a more self-sufficient nation. Several of the countries in South America learned from the oil/petroleum shortages of the mid-70's. The automobiles in those countries run (largely) on Ethanol now. It's okay with me if you want to throw rocks at Haliburton, but what about Shell, Exon - all the oil companies and the "big three" auto manufacturers? Until we kick our oil habit, and move on to things like hydrogen and other fuel sources (whatever happened to gasohol?) it is inevitable that we'll find ourselves dukein' it out in the petro-rich regions. Lastly, I respect the opinions and sentiments of all of those who protest war - any war. President George W. Bush is on his way out, and I'm sure a Democrat will replace him. Whoever Bush's replacement will be (Clinton? Obama? Gore?) will find their own bogeyman after a couple of years on the job. I predict that whatever conflict that the new leader faces will be met with at least a 50% opposition. I'm afraid that we will never be ONE as a nation again.
