Moving on....
Just wanted to comment on the LRP/Delbert show last night in H'ville.
It was a fundraiser for a parenting-mentoring thing, Delbert said, "Y'all doing a wise thing here...these folks trying to help people learn how to raise their kids so they won't kill you when they grow up.
It was in the Convention Hall, pretty plush, seats maybe 1500. Most were society types, there for the charity.
But not all. At the very front were a row of tables at $500 a pop. Crowd pretty laid-back, not too interested.
Lee Roy acknowledged some redheads.
So, 4 ladies make their way down front, to the stage. More follow. The obvious problem, those folks that paid $500 a table now seeing the behinds of a bunch of drunk redneck ladies. Complaints follow, ushers move in, some disburse, others don't. Cops called in, begin clearing folks out. Delbert, while still singing, goes to the edge of the stage, grabs a cop, says, "Leave 'em alone, let 'em dance."
'Twas all they wanted to hear, they were out of there. So, a bunch of folks that came for the music head on down. Delbert asks they help one on stage. She starts doing the hoochie-coo, he sings to her. Others proceed onto the stage--musta' been 8-9. I'm thinking big brawl, he handles it flawlessly. Dances with each, they let each other cut in, some sing harmony, he sings to them, all smiles. Mary Jane reminded me he's no doubt dealt with drunken redneck women before. 😀
They played 4 1/2 hours. Ended up with Lee Roy, his keyboard guy on B-3, Delbert's on piano, Donnie Frith, another songwriter, Delbert playing guitar, and 8-9 drunken redneck women onstage for the last 40 minutes or so.
Half the crowd left, the other half went nuts. It was just like being at 2nd Street Music Hall these days, when it seems like the whole world ends up in a happy jam. Thanks to Brent and Lefty for showing the way.
It was a cold-dead blast. Oh, and by the way....we stopped at a nice pub(Humphrey's) for a bite beforehand. After we order, Mary Jane asked if I had prearranged for that table. I had no clue. She pointed, looking over our sholder, right beside us on the wall, was a big picture of Gregory Lenoir. Nice omen of things to come.
Thanks for listening, EAPFP.
