WOW! Walnut Creek was ROCKIN"! What is it about Raleigh? The Brothers are always outstanding here and tonight was a high water mark as far as I'm concerned. The band was very tight and on the mark in every song, hitting on all cues and cylinders throughout the evening. Great, great set list, played with burning intensity - Hittin' the Note many, many times. My brain is very blissfully tired but let me try to post some brief comments on the highlights:
Going to the Mellow Mushroom pre show party with the giant shrooms outside and great pizza and sandwiches and guestbook friendships inside!
Warren going out into the parking lot on his "golf cart tour" and playing an incredible three songs set out by the Mule van - In My Life, into the Mystic and one other. So powerful, so beautiful. What superstar does this these days? Is this cool or what?
Warren joining Galactic for their last two songs - playing tasteful slide solos and
trading licks with their guitarist and horn player. A prelude of even greater things to come!
DWYNM/NMCTB - Great start - taunt, aggressive and set a pace that they kept up the whole evening. They meant business from the start.
Desdemona - Gregg's voice - as good as it gets - which is the best of our generation. Derek's solo - made my soul soar! The bar was set incredible high for Warren who nailed it with a great finish - A great song, already destined to be an enduring ABB classic.
High Cost of Low Livin' - Derek's solo on this song is the crowning achievement of his contribution to new notes played by the Brothers during his tenure. Tonight was an all-consuming solo that transcended me and filled my heart with joy. Hittin' the note indeed! This is the best solo I have ever heard him do on this song. My other favorite time is the last Sunday of the Beacon run in 2001 - I think March 25th - check it out as well.
Same Thing - nice shift in the previously heavy guitar ending section with drums, congas and bass rhythms moving it along instead with a very funky beat!
Audley Freid (sp) and the horn player from Galactic played separately on several songs that are not usually guest jam songs.
Oteil! Oteil! Oteil! Great bass playing tonight - same with the drums - everyone was a musician's musician tonight. Seven men that created a musical tour de force! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
I'm sure I'm leaving many highlights out but my brain is fried and it's late - can't wait to listen to the CD's of the show and go through all the emotion again!
Warren and Derek have really gotten tight in their craft together. It was the 41st show of the year and they know how to play it full tilt boogie!
This is the tape to get and listen to over and over till we see them in September and the magic happens again!
