Echo some of the earlier comments on last night's Eric Clapton show at Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. Outstanding show. The band was super tight and Clapton provided plenty of room for band to solo. Clapton's solo on "I Shot the Sheriff" was spot on, melodic build. "Got to Get Better in a Little While" a personal favorite, also ripped.
Derek wore a smile on his face the whole night. Many times during the show it seemd surreal to see Derek playing with Clapton. After all, for the last few years, this pairing has been on the top of many lists for musical experiences to witness. "Motherless Children" was super tight with all three guitarists in perfect synch. Sound up front was great. I, too thought that the synth keyboards were a bit harsh but only minor, minor complaint.
Thought Derek really picked up steam during the acoustic set and never looked back. You could sense that once the crowd got a glimpse of his immeasurable talent they wanted more and he provided. "Little Queen of Spades" was a highlight. Knowing it was coming, couldn't wait for the crowd to experience what we have known for so long. He built and then exploded. Clapton also seemed to pick it up in the latter part of the show. His solos on "After Midnight" and "Further on Up the Road" were awesome.
This is a concert not to miss. Robert Cray was very strong and to see four guitarists on stage of that caliber during "Old Love" and "Crossroads" was pretty spectacular. On some songs, Clapton would take first solo, and while great not quite there. Bramhall and Derek would then take their solos elevating the intensity of the song. When the song shifted back to Clapton for his solo, he raised the bar to the next level. To me, it seemed to confirm the need for Clapton to be pushed and squeeze out his best playing. Just a fantastic show.
