Oh my God -- I just heard something that gave me chillbumps! I just got off the phone with Col. Bruce Hampton and he told me a Derek Trucks story that blew my mind. As always with the Colonel, I never know quite what to believe, but this is too good not to pass on. Bruce told me that Derek is in New York right now recording a session with McCoy Tyner, Ron Carter and Jack Dejohnette. I asked how this came about and Bruce said it was put together by Blue Note Records. He said he talked to Derek last night and he told Bruce that he'd never been scared in his life, but right now his hands are shaking! Derek said it was like being in the presence of Titans. Can you imagine what this session (if true) will do for Derek? How many guitarists could sit in with Eric Clapton and then be invited to record with Jazz Giants such as these? Clapton himself, good as he is, would have trouble switching gears to keep up with these folks. It's a nice thought for the day ...
