Only saw 3 shows this year, 3/16-18. The 18th is definitely one of the best I've ever seen. Listening to the entire Beacon run this year, there are so many highlights, you could put out a 10 disc compilation, while hardly repeating one song.
The overplayed song of the year, has to be Liz Reed. While this lineup plays it differently each night, especially Derek's solo, I still believe there could have been other alternatives. To me Liz Reed got played out in the 90's with the Dickey/Warren lineup. IMO, it just got stale. Hard to believe, considering it might just be the greatest rock instrumental ever written. Dickey & Duane did it justice every time and noboby has ever come close to Duane's solo on that tune. Derek twists it around and makes it interesting and does breath some new life into it, but he can do the same thing, comping off a different theme. True Gravity was the instrumental of the 90's. All 3 lineups with Dickey (Warren, Jack, Derek) did great things with that song. Egypt was the song that I thought would develop wings. It got Warren out of the box and shows a more melodic side to his solo. Warren, in the big instrumentals (Liz Reed, Gravity, High Falls, Les Brer, Illness...), tends to gravitate towards the same sound, in each of those songs, but Egypt seemed to be an exception for him. One of his best solo's in a big jam, IMHO. The new stretched out versions of Revival, also shows a melodic side of Warren, I'd like to hear more of.
