Review of a Clapton bootleg in Rolling Stone:
July 23rd, 2006
SAP Arena, Mannheim, Germany
One yeara after his short-lived Cream reunion, Eric Clapton seems to have turned his attention to the songbook of his second-most-loved group: Derek and the Dominos. With most of the Dominos either dead or institutionalized, Clapton invited second-generation Allman Brother Derek Trucks to join his touring band for a European trek that features blistering takes on three rare Dominos tunes ("Got to Get Better in a Little While," Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" and "I Am Yours") in addition to the perennial "Layla." They're far and away the highlights of this otherwise standard Clapton hits revue (efficiently bootlegged by a German fan), which finds him sleepwalking through "Cocaine," "I Shot the Sherriff" and (shudder) "Wonderful Tonight" for the millionth time.
