Clapton's on my short list of favorites, but what I suspect is going on is that Clapton knows his audience. They, by and large, want the hits and they want the arrangements they know from their cds/records. It's a similar but distinctly different audience than the ABB's. And WAY different than Derek's or ARU's audience. And Clapton knows they didn't come to hear far our stuff that's just so different . They came to hear him.
So it's less about improv, and more about familiarity. At least that's my take on things. I could be wrong, though....
