Morning all! ( dave!) I just rolled out of bed from another night of kick-my-a$$ music with Drive By Truckers, Robert Randolph and The Black Crowes at Festival Pier in Philly. I don't know WHY it happens, but it seems to me that just about everyshow i see these days is THE BEST SHOW EVER, and i guess saying that about last nights rock and roll fiesta would be an overstatement, but it is definatly up there on my list.... Drive by Truckers: first time i saw them, and they rocked. lots of cool energy and what not, but i guess i wasnt into it enough to really 'feel it'. That's ok! after the Truckers got off the stage, alot of the crowd moved, so next thing i know i'm FRCOTR for the rest of the night....it's becoming quite a habit...... anywho, next up was Robert Randolph and the Family band, who did a pretty typical setlist that had many moments when the whole band would just smile and laugh and project a general feeling of wellness through me...definatly easy to get yo' dance on with that band, and their bass player blew me away this time....i was hoping he grabbed someone from the audience to play but i guess they didnt have time. RR kicks ass, always has, always will. Ok, now for my favorite parts....this is the fourth time for me seeing the Black Crowes this past year. I remember seeing them in the 90's and totally being disappointed, but at the encouragement of friends on this site (THANK YOU BIGDAVEONBASS) i decided to give them another chance.....and this past year i've experienced some wonderfull, etheral music as a result. It has been said, many times and in many ways that the black crowes are one of America's great rocka nd roll bands, and they certainly do fit that bill. there is no pyrotechnics, no flash, no pomp but LOTS of circumstance with this band. Chris Robinson is truly a spiritual person and you can see the PURE LIGHT just shining in him. Matter of a fact, during "Cosmic Friend" he always goes into this part and sings "May the pure light....may the pure light....may the pure light within you SHHIIIIIINNNNNEEE"..... WOW. it somehow turned into a profound spiritual experience for me, and when i looked up the white lights from the stage had Chris illuminated and the look of serenity of his face, coupled with the long brown hair, made him look quite a bit christ-like (IMHO, and just fyi, there where NO drugs involved...)......I dunno, i guess we reflect where we are in life in everything we see and i really see that Chris (and to a lesser extent, Rich) have found some sense of happiness and balance in their life and radiate that through their music as a gift for all of us to share. ok, sorry to ramble........but i will say this and shut up: TBC did an awesome set, and the most astounding, jaw-dropping moment for me came during their cover of Neil Youngs Alabama....the whole band sings (in pretty damn good harmony) and nails it........then on to the stupid songs that the crowd had been waiting to hear (that i would have been happy just turing the radio on for). Earlier Rich Robinson (ah, yummmy....) channels his inner Dylan and nails "It Takes a Train Laugh" . Cool, cool, cool. They ended with Tied up and Swallowed, a song that even makes ME blush! 😆 if you love music as much as i know you do, try and check out The Black Crowes. its Music 'fo 'yo a$$ heres the setlist, i probably couldnt have picked a better one myself!
