Lot's of very interesting threads these days. Love your post Werner. A Dickey tribute album would work for me and given how many musicians grew up on his songs I bet they'd line up to contribute. Great point about giving respect when playing some one elses song. Wouldn't it be a nice compromise and wouldn't it go a long way towards mending fences if the ABB played Dickey's songs but introduced them as such? I can imagine Warren or Gregg saying something like "We're gonna play a song now that was originally written by DB. He's got his own band now DB&GS, go check em out the next time they come to town." Then they could play Liz Reed or True Gravity or High Falls. Maybe I'm dreaming what with lawsuits and such but it might just put this "play DB songs or don't play them" thing to rest.
I like Linus' post too about retiring some of the standards. One big problem with that though is that the majority of people who go to the shows are there to hear the standards. Lot's of people leave the show ticked off if they don't hear Melissa or Midnight Rider etc. Those folks don't follow the politics and personel changes. They don't see a half dozen shows a year like us freaks. They see one show a year at their local shed and they like to know what to expect. That's one of the problems with dropping DB's songs entirely, the average fan will feel short changed if he doesn't get to hear them. BTW, I apologize for getting a little huffy the other day on the same subject. If I hurt anyone's feelings I'm sorry.
Two days till Water-woowhooo-loo!!
