Great post, Josh-but Luther Dickinson doesn't have to apologize to anybody for his slide playing. He comes from the Delta side of the Blues, which is totally different from where Derek is coming from. His Dad is Jim Dickinson who produced Wild Horses for the Stones and has as long a blues tradition as the ABB.
They are peers in the truest sense of the word-however Derek is coming at the Blues from a jazz perspective and sensibility, whereas Luther was into punk rock until he got back to his roots, the dirty hill country Mississippi blues, which is just as hard to play with any kind of authenticity, especially for a white kid.
Luther played on the Replacement's Pleased to Meet Me, which Dad Jim produced.
Both are comrades in arms, and both are the Brightest Lights in the world of American music right now.
P.S. I would LOVE to see those two tearin' it up together on stage. Talk about a Cutting Contest!
