Good morning GB!!! I have always enjoyed all the posts and reviews here. I plan to catch the ABB in Charlotte and am trying to work out a road trip to B-ham. So I'm going to have to wait until then to see them for myself. I would love to travel around and see them like some of y'all, but family responsibilities and lack of funds kind of crimp my style. Let me tell you it's hell being po'.
Anyway I like to tell y'all about a show I saw last night in Charlotte at the Double Door. The Partime Blues Band with Jerry Eubanks (former MTB) and Rick Willis. Folks it was great! It may not have been in an arena or shed and the attendance was about par for the course in this musical wasteland that is Charlotte, N.C., but it was excellent none the less.
Rusty Barkley is friend of mine. So I'm a little hesitant about tooting his horn here on the ABB's GB. But he is one of the best pickers bar none IMHO. Those of you who plan to attend the ABB in CLT in Aug. or find yourself in the CLT area, would do well to check out the Parttime Blues Bland. I guarantee.
The Partime Boys were on fire last night bolstered by the presence of Jerry Eubanks and Rick Willis. Jerry has lost none of his chops on sax as well as flute. And this guy Rick Willis is a very fine player in the Toy Caldwell and Charlie Daniels mode. He is blessed with an excellent stage presence. Uncle Grubb, keyboard player for the Parttimers, turned in his best performance. Shades of one Mr. Leavel. And Rusty's playing was what we refer to the epitome of hittin'-the-note.
The music of the ABB was very prevalent throughout. One of the best examples being a One Way Out>Zep Tune tease (I believe How Many More Years)>Some kind of Munsters tease? on keys>then Midnight Rider>One way Out end.
Jerry would get the band to bring the tempo and volume down then play a beautiful solo. Rick Willis playing a beautiful cherry red Les Paul created some very tasty runs. And Rusty Barkley whether on slide, blues, country or rock just tearing the stings off his piece meal strat or a nice 62 Les Paul Jr.
The show was what music is supposed to be about. I realize some may say that nobody can play Brothers music better than the ABB. But I would say the music of the Allmans really isn't just "their" music.
It is our music. There isn't one guitar player today from the south that isn't influenced by Brother Duane or Brother Dickey in some way shape or form. I certainly am no theological/philosophical expert on the afterlife. I'm not an expert on anything just ask my wife, but I feel in my heart that while Brother Duane may be looking down on the Gregg, Butch and Jaimoe vs. Dickey situation with a broken heart, I feel that he probably is getting a kick that his music is being played so well by the Parttime Blues Band and bands all over the south, the nation and the world.
I'd like to thank Lana and Rowland for allowing me and others this space to pontificate. I want to thank y'all for listening. And may God bless each and every one of you. Peace.
