Happy Anniversery to Mr and Mrs. Philly Bob...
a few folks asked me to post a review about going to see Devon Allman and Honeytribe so I will do that..
we to check the band out last night at Porters in Crystal Lake , Il... that is about 90 minutes from my home , so it was a bit of a hike but it was well worth it..
Devon and I have pm'd here but never met in person..I am going to post what I told him after the show last night...
I have heard some of the band's music before on Tour pros sunday night radio show and by listening to the downlaods available on the bands site..so i was looking forward to seeing them live..
Crystal lake may have a lake and it may be crystal but i didn't see either of those things..it was dark..
got to the venue and scored the parking space right in front of the door, so I knew this was going to be special..packed house in a nice, clean upscale space..got in met Devon and the band and brought my amp and Goldie in and settled in for the first set...
I must say I was really suprised with what I heard..I knew they would be good but the band was a little blusier than i thought they would be (which I liked)..they came out firing and played a first set with mainly originals, and a killer drum solo and bass solo..like their website said, Devon HAS surrounded himself with some relay good players..Pedro Arevalo has been playing some guitar with the guys but did not make this trip..Jack, George and Mark all stepped out in this first set..
Now for the soapbox...these are my thoughts..take them for what they are worth..
it must be a blessing and a bit of a burden to have Devon's last name...I am sure it opens some doors but the legacy attached to the name has a price as well...I bet these guys get asked to do ABB material a lot , and you know, they could..I bet a lot of people wouldn't blame them if they did...but they don't...they do thier thing and Devon is blazing his own trail here..Nothing Like the ABB at all and I give Devon all the credit in the world..great singer, great frontman, great leader on stage but, what was a big suprise was how well he plays the guitar...the man can flat out play..Devon I, said this to last night and I will write it here..You should be proud..you are standing on your two feet , doing things your way and it says a lot about the man you are...
the boy was ripping and it sure was fun to watch and hear..
I was asked to join the band to open the second set..we started with One Way Out (one of two ABB covers, the other being a third set playing of Midnight Rider, which, i believe Devon did for a birthday in the house), and moved right onto Red House..we shook it up and the crowd responded...when i stepped off the stage many in the audience asked me how long i had been playing with the band..lol.."two songs" was my response..that says a lot about the caliber of musicians these guys are..it never missed a beat..
I was asked back up for a couple of numbers in the third set and had a lot of fun..I love music for so many reasons..but the fun of meeting brothers ya never knew you had for the first time and playing with the sheer joy that we all did was a reminder of how special this family really is and how much it means to me to be a small part of it..said my goodbyes kind of quick as I had a long ride home...
on the way home , I thought of my last 8 days..Opening two shows for Oteil and witnessing a spectacular performance by them last saturday..having BB King sign my goldtop (thanks for the mojo BB..she sure sounded good last night), and playing with Honeytribe...I thought of all the amazing people I have met here and just smiled..Devon, God Bless you man..if it was sub par,I would tell you..it ROCKED ..a fun band, filled with good players and good people...I thought also of what Devon's father, uncle and their bandmates started and what lucky folks we are to have all of each other..
you all support great music and will not be disappointed when you go to see Honeytribe with Devon Allman..
thanks guys for letting me play and making me feel so welcome..
thanks to Lana and Rowland for all the good you do here..you two should go on a date..:)
