Just in from Knoxville....wanted to post a few words about tonights show while they are fresh.
I've always said anytime the Brothers open with DWYNM/AMCTB that we're in for one heck of a show and the boys 'brung' it. Lots of energy and dead on playin' was coming off the stage tonight. As the band is finishing a fine execution of 'Cross" they go right into YDLM head on. The crowd went into pandemonium and the band continued to feed off the energy.
On the drive up I kept saying over and over, "Please let Jack Pearson be there!" With no opening act, I was assuming the usual break between sets, I was correct and that is when I spotted Jack side stage, just before the second set opener.
I saw Gregg walk in for second set and in the darkness thought he had changed into a Tennessee Volunteers jersey. However, when the lights came up, it was a Harley- Davidson jersey. The ole boy wears orange well!
Second set opens with Melissa and Gregg standing center stage with his acoustic. He didn't miss a lick, he was smiling and very confident in his delivery. I don't think I've ever heard Melissa played any sweeter.
THEN, Jack Pearson comes to the stage, the crowd erupts and it's on big time. Statesboro, minus Otiel, no bass??? Whaaa? I'll just be skunked!! I didn't notice Jack had Otiel's bass and I sure couldn't hear any bass, but Jack is playing Otiel's bass! Ole Libby's fumblin' for the phone ( something I rarely do, but I knew the Fox would dig this and that Same Thing stuff!);)
Yeah, we got an Otiel-less Statesboro with Warren and Jack. Heck, I was so excited I can't even remember if Derek came on for Statesboro! Derek ( I think) and Otiel rejoin the band for Same Thing and the boys launch into a three guitar and bass attack that had the unknowing spinnin' and those of us in the know looking around at each other noddin' and grinnin' our "hell yeah" grins!
Nice to see and briefly chat with WillieHoward, JNB and Greg Potter at the Hittin' The Note table along with Origapeach. Mr. and Mrs. GreatSkaught, sorry I missed y'all.
I'm exhausted and I'm sure I've made absolutely no sense, but in a nutshell, Knoxville was a show for the ages! Simply fantastic. I saw alot of joy coming from the stage and it was infectious in the audience as well.
Here's what I remember ..... DWYNM/AMCTB, YDLM, Midnight Rider Every Hungry Woman, Come and Go Blues, Egypt ( nice, this is growing on me), Woman Across The River, Melissa, Statesboro Blues, Same Thing, Dimples and IMOER, .....Encore: Southbound.
