JNB, its often hard to tell (from the cheap seats, that is) when someone breaks a string, but I also thought it was cool when they keep on playing and can still as you said, 'hit the note'.
Two examples that I saw up close were Tom Rush and John Hammond. Rush just sang an extra verse without music as he re-strung and Hammond just keep singing until the song was over. Hammond must've broke 12 strings that night and chatted as he re-strung between songs. His guitar ended up looking like multiple pictures of a palm tree, or maybe Buckwheat's fro! (Oh no! They've shot Buckheat!).
