As a baseball Umpire for the last 8 years, I can say the last thing you expect to have happen is a fan/parent
come after you on the field. There have now been laws passed to help protect Umpires with fines of $10,000
for any physical abuse. While every
Umpire I know is all about the game,
occasionally we have to "control" a
player or fan by ejecting them from
the game or the park. There have been times, very few, where the local
sheriff's dept. have had to be called to escort someone out. Threats are
sometimes heard but we, umpires,
don't give it much thought.
I also will say. The Umpires I have
known and called with are some of the finest, high integrity, people you
could ever meet. All only care about doing the right thing and calling it straight, although some players, coaches, fans may not always agree...
