A fun little evening here last night....we have an annual deal here called RiverFest, a mini-Jazzfest, City Stages, Music Midtown, etc. It's run by pompuos asses at the Chamber of Commerce, very heavy on pop country, an occasional overpaid over-the-hill oldie, to the exclusion of everything else. Sponsors get to drink in designated areas, the cops bust anyone else with a beverage. Some of us want none of it. Last night, management of Boogie's, Cultural Arts, a black radio station, and another group put on an event clandestinely referred to as, "anti-Riverfest." It featured Getaway Cars, the new house band Tommy Talton has created for Boogie's, Stephen McCollough on keys, also Dewayne Burnside, Eddie Shaw, and Kenny Neel. All manner of coolers welcome, we and several others did the tablecloth on the cooler, picnic spread with candles, a la Chastain Park. They were hoping for 150, got 400+, and a truly great time was had by all. A few of us put this together last December with the goal of having Govt Mule here the night before Bonaroo, we got some help from some at the site here, those in control didn't handle negotiations at that level very well, and the evening morphed into this, which turned out very well. Several have stated something larger is happening here, I've taken it with an optimistic grain of salt til last night, I'm starting to believe this situation has real staying power--we'll see.
