SPDB - I love your gumption, but hell I also love to counter point anything you say, just 'cause it is fun. I actaully am in your camp from the standpoint that I'd like to have some control (if I was a lot younger) but most people in this country don't have a clue how to invest. After all the average savings for an American family is somewhere around 50K. That is pretty dismal. It shows that people don't have the discipline (I'm being nice here, there is another obvious reason) to save money. they will go out and buy a car, go on vacation etc. Even if they do invest an Enron could wipe out a lifetime of savings. Ultimately they are broke, have no income and become a ward of the system at a much higher cost to all of us. some people consider SS an entitlement, maybe it can be better described as conservative forced savings. The huge issue is in the 30's there were something like 25 workers for every retiree, now it is something like 2.3.
