The newbie warrior and the 'Cause' are separated while in bootcamp. Whatever a person 'thinks' is patriotic generally isn't. The 'yahoos' are washed out fairly quickly and sent home to their mothers. The rest of us were soon shaved of our pony-tails and attitudes. We were taught to think only as one unit and not just ourselves. If you ask any vet
'What was it you were fighting for?' you will find it was for their buddies. 'The cause' is some abstract thing floating out in the stream...
There is no 'Cause'. It is something 'Springtime Patriots' make up to justify the body count. The warrior is not asked his opinion on anything. He just goes and does what his country asks. It is so hard to explain to folks who have never served. They base everything on 'Gomer Pyle' and 'A Few Good Men'. Military service is far more than that, and deserves not to be slandered by Hollywood or those that do not know any better.
Nobody that enters the military wants to kill anyone. There is a desire to serve your country and in the words of Abraham Lincoln : "I joined for the same reason many others do; I had nothing better to do at the time." Folks like everybody else...wanting to serve the country they love.
It looks good in print when somebody unknowingly raises 'the Cause' up to something noble; but it just isn't so. I had a job to do and did it gladly and wanted to return home and be with my family in one piece. Clear and simple.
Don't place tags on what we did. Not only do you not know; you don't know that you don't know. Far better to just stay silent unless you were there....Peach.
