I spend most of my spare time at my mother's lake cottage in the summer. Last summer there was a horrific accident with my step brother - to nutshell it, he was on a wave runner and got ran over by a boat...he was 13, lost his left leg below the knee, took a propeller up his right arm and essentially thru the head. After being airlifted and several emergency brain surgeries, he was given a 10% chance to live thru one final surgery. He did live. He's in school, doing well, progressing daily, learning to walk. It's maybe the closest I've ever been to a miracle.
I share this for a couple of reasons. First, Joel had several angels nearby - there was a fishing boat literally 50 yards away...the dude in the boat was an EMT. He saved him from drowning and immediately got him to shore, grabbed his kit and went to work....along with a surgeon who was also close by and 'happened' to see the accident. Once he got to shore there 'happened' to be a few nurses in the crowd to help as well. It was amazing - and still is. So fortunate.
The other reason I bring this up now is to thank you fine folks - many I have met, many I have not met YET. I never posted a word about it here - partly b/c, selfishly, in some ways, this place is a wonderful 'escape' for me....and I didn't want to read the many posts you all would have left in support. But, truthfully, the fact that I know I would have received tons of PMs, prayers, vibes, posts, cards, etc had I posted meant and means a helluva lot to me. There is a lot of strength on this GB.
I guess my point is there are angels everywhere - they were there for Joel, and they were there for Derek. And many, many, many of them are right here amongst these pages. And I'd like to thank you all for being the finest cats around.
