In recent years, more than one person has made the observation that electing a president has become a matter of choosing the lesser of two evils (Gore/Bush; Bush/Kerry) as opposed to putting the person in office who is what the country needs at a given time. Setting aside the obvious fact that we can all disagree about "what the country needs," Butch make an excellent point with his George Washington example.
It seems the presidency is up for sale right now. Whoever raises the biggest war chest and can blanket the airwaves with commercials will win. Perhaps if we allowed each candidate to raise only a million dollars that would force them to rely on a discussion of the issues to get our attention.
But what the hell do I know?
