I remember the first show I went to after 9/11, the Black Crowes at the Beacon. Boy was that a cathartic experience. After living about 3 blocks from the WTC and losing friends and hearing about countless other people I knew from my town and high school being murdered, it was a well needed rest from reality. I remember they opened the show with Sometimes Salvation. Chants of USA were erupting throughout the Beacon, you would have thought you were at the Olympics and not a concert. I also recall everyone in the place was blazing away and Chris Robinson claimed, "Well, it still smells like New York."
The weather today in NYC reminds me so much of that day. Tomorrow one of my college roommates is getting married in NYC. It will be a celebration of the lives of friends lost, and a big F YOU to the goons who think they can change our way of living.
