Hey Familia!
Saw Dead yesterday at SPAC in NY. Gotta say, the vibe of the outdoor gig was fun- and seeing Brother Warren made me real proud in a sea of DeadHeads! But frankly- it was a Big snooze! Sorry to say-'cause I love the Dead. But you know-it was 3 plus hours of Endless *(sometimes meaningless) Noodling and I can't believe that Brother Warren was that inspired by all that. THe Dead never rose to the occasion of a Boogie- anywhere at anytime, sadly. It just kinda.....dragged. You know, they have written so many Great tunes over the years- and yeah, some of them are commercial- *just like say the ABB's Ramblin man or such- But God, was I craving to hear a"Casey Jones" or a "US Blues" a "Scarlet Begonias'-"Truckin" "Eyes of the World"- anything that would have been "song oriented"....as opposed to the endless "noodling" in 10-15 minute songs. In my humble opinion- instead of a Birthday Party in Jerry's honor- it was more like a lamentful Dirge of a funeral!
As a bassist- It WAS great to see/hear Phil Lesh. Now he can noodle till kingdom come in my book- because to me, Phil is as close as we get to the spirit and soul of Berry Oakley! Period.
I couldn't hang till the end-it was painful. But I did love listening to MARS HOTEL on the way home! 🙂
