It sure is good to see, and read about, how good the bands are playing. Meaning the Brothers and Brother Dickey's band. Music brings joy to heart of many and myself. Nothing like good music to boogie by, or just lay down and listen to. As Brother Duane said, "We are spreading a religion here," meaning the music of the ABB. He said, "Music never hurt nobody." True as can be, he was.
Speaking of music. I had the pleasure of hearing the CD, of the Brother from Feb. 1972. That band was made up with the big Five. The Oak was something else. The man was well before his time. Other bass players wish the could play with the drive, and the finesse, as he did and still keep the band on the right track with all that fire. Throw in the sweet lines in the pretty stuff and you hear it all. Others are still trying to do that. Good as the are they, or at least no one has stepped up to the plate. The man was the best.
I had been ask to listen to that recording to see if I could tell who the other guitar player was on the song, You Don't Love Me. In listening, I found out, at least, this is the way I hear it.
No, there is not another guitar player. I could not hear one if there was. What I did hear was a great guitar player coming into his own as far as the world, would see him, doing what makes him one of the top guitar player in the world. No matter what people think of his personal life. His creativeness is untouchable. The man creates so much right there in the heat of battle, that it is unreal. That is why he makes mistakes sometimes. Trying to create and find his way back. What he was doing was playing his and Brother Duane's parts. Sometimes he would try to do both at once. When you hear the other, or what sounds like an other guitar, it is Betts making a mistake. Which this only happened a couple of times? It seems that it threw some people off into thinking there might be two guitar players on that song. No, its Just Brother Dickey showing what he was made of even back then.
Remember a lot of people after Duane passed said, " Where did he come from, or I did not know he could play like that." Trouble was, they never paid attention to the song Black Hearted Woman. Dickey does all the guitar work on that bad Lady. Those that did not pick up on that missed the boat.
Thank you for your time. I will drop in from time, to time, if you don't mind?
Ps. Brother Gregg was singing his tail of and it was good to hear how he used to inter act with the people. Listening to the drummers brought back so many memories of how good they were back when it was just the two of them. That is no way meant to be a knock, just saying how great they were. All the free style playing, is what made this great band, along with the canary voice of the greatest white blues singer to come down the pike. Memories, memories. How sweet some are.
