Is Derek & Warren still switching off, on the order of the solos in Dreams? It seems every recent version I've heard has Warren playing the big 2nd solo. He also practically plays the same solo he's done since he first joined the band. At least Derek and Jack have instilled a little more creativity in their solos. I don't want to sound like I'm knocking Warren, but I prefer Derek doing the closing solo. I feel he (Derek) takes a step back with Warren sometimes, that he never did with Dickey or Jimmy.
Again, I'm not trying to flame Warren. He's an incredible player, a workhorse and contributes in huge ways to the band. I am concerned about a little overkill though. Take the new versions of "High Cost". That seemed to be Derek's stand out song, but now they have the two guitar parts throughout. Maybe it was Derek's idea, who knows, but I prefer the first arrangement, where he had a lot of room to step up.
Warren has the riffs, the energy and his great full driving style, but Derek digs deeper to discover new ideas. Warren is getting better in that department, but I really think it's Derek that has instilled the new life into this band. I thought that when he joined in 99 and still think some of those shows were among some of the best ABB shows I've ever seen, or heard. And Jack has to be one of the best players on the planet today. He's got it all, technique, creativity, emotion (soul) and the ability to put it all together right.
