The last I heard of Capt. Frank Mundis, he had gone into semi-retirement, because he had let some kind of maritime license expire, and the gov't wanted him to take the test again. Trouble was that he could barely read, so he was unable to take the written test himself. That was several years ago. When my kids were smaller, we went out whale watching on a boat from Montauk...and his boat had just come back with one heck of a shark hanging off the back. The TV show 60 Minutes had just done a profile on him, and it was exciting to see a celeb in person. He and Peter Benchley both say he is the inspiration for the character in Jaws. Me, I can get seasick, so I don't go out on a boat fishing. Just put me on a sunny beach instead!
