Lee, You pretty much expressed my gripe with EC's playing-there is almost no passion in his playing anymore. He has always been great about acknowledging his influences (like the Stones) but he is so reverential (is that a word?) to his influences that he seems afraid of offending them by being playing flashy licks. There also doesn't to be much humor in his playing anymore-every time I see a photo of him playing lately there is almost never see a smile on his face. It looks like he's doing a job that either bores the hell out of him (to quote Lee) or that he just doesn't like doing that job anymore. That's it-it's just a job. Which is why there's no passion. Anyone who thinks I'm full of it (and I know there are MANY) I'll make the following offer-I am waiting on the 10-24-70 Derek and the Dominos late show from the Fillmore East (and I'm trying to get the 10-23-70 late show as well). INMO, this represents EC at his absolute peak. Once I get the 10-24 show (and hopefully 10-23) I will offer it up as a B & P to prove my point. I don't think anyone will disagree after hearing these blistering performances.
