I'll say what I said a few weeks ago. Every version of this band except the 1972 - 5 man version has been distinctly different than the original. In 73 they were hot and Greggs Vocals were great. But the band had a much different sound. 73 is one of my favorite eras but it was different than the original as are all the other incarnations.
I agree Bird that Greggs Vocals sound Great to me. He has aged well. It may be the only difference between now and then (73 - 92) is what he is not taking before the shows. There is no question that booze & other stuff effect the sound of our favorite singer. He sounds different sober to me. But he is sounding great. He has trouble remembering the lyrics but he has sung A LOT OF SONGS. I hope like hell the Dickeyheads don't take off on that cause I really have hesitated to mention it.
Keep in mind that whether he is singing the right words or not at least he is singing the right songs and in the right key. I'll leave it at that for now.
When I think of all the different sounds of the different incarnations of the band. I really think this one SOUNDS most like the original. I'm not saying they are as good. I'm saying the sound of the band is closer to the original that anything I heard in the 90s. I emphasize that I am not suggesting this is the 2nd best version of the band. To make my point I'll use the Chuck & Lamar era. In my opinion thats the 2nd best version of the band but also the furthest in terms of similarity from the sound of the original band . Does that make sense?
Red Dog, When was the interview that Kirk did with you & Joe Dan on your DVD?
The only reason I ask is you were talking about the sound of the Band at that point in time (guessing mid 90s?). You said something to the effect of you thought the sound was starting to come together. Just curius when that was.
I really enjoyed watching that, Thanks!
