Donna Hopkins, as all her fans know, is already a spectacular guitar player. But after seeing her show Friday night, I'd have to say she is getting scary good. For only the second time ever, I saw her play without a keyboard player – lap steel master Steve Cunningham sat in for the entire night as the fourth member of the band.
I was amazed to discover that I didn't miss the organ solos – Steve fit in perfectly with Donna. The two seemed a perfect complement, pushing each other to new heights. Once again I count my lucky stars to be in the right place at the right time!
And speaking of right place, Brother Bill Ector pulled out his Les Paul and sat in with Donna for a couple of songs, playing slide on Time To Travel and picking on Whipping Post. Later Bill told me it was his dream come true to sit in with Donna.
Look for this show to be offered up very soon – you will be astonished …
