Hey Buppalo, I've probably related this story before, but what the Hell?
On September 24, 2000, I decided to make the drive from Louisville to Huntsville, Alabama, for the Big Spring Jam. This was before I had a computer, and I still got all of my information from the old Allman Brothers Band hotline, featuring the voice of the one and only Kirk West.
Since the future of the band was very much up in the air at that point, I was anxious to see at least one more show. Called the hotline on a Saturday, heard about the show, and jumped in the ol' S-10 the next day and headed down I-65 towards the Heart Of Dixie.
SOOOO glad I made the trip!!! Even though it turned out to be nowhere near the end of the line for the band, it was still totally worth it. The show was terrific. Rolled into town at the last minute, lucked out and found a good parking spot, and made my way to the main stage for the Allmans' show. Tons of people there, but I was still able to worm my way to a good spot right in front of the sound board--no small feat for a man of my size.
Of course, I since I didn't have a computer yet, I didn't know anyone here in the Mushroom Nation. But I do remember seeing a little fellow in a cowboy outfit right in front of me, and his enthusiasm was infectious. Every so often between songs, he would let out a big yell. "HEY GREGG, WE LOVE THE ALLMAN BROTHERS!!!"
Well, when I got my computer a few months later, one of the first cats that I started corresponding with was Buppalo, and it turns out that he (along with many others) were at that Huntsville show, and we were practically standing right next to each other. And the guy in the cowboy suit? None other than Harold Ray! Every time I listen to that show, I can hear him quite clearly. Small world, indeed.
