A bit of sad news from NE Ala. In my high school days, some friends had a garage band that gained some noteriety around these parts. They made 14 singles in Muscle Shoals, Duane played on 3 of them. One of their roadies, Johnny Wiemann, remains a good friend to this day. He tells stories of hanging at the motel pool with Duane and Billy Preston. One day, in late fall 1971, we came in from fishing after we both got off work. His wife ran up to the car in tears, telling us of Duane's passing. He was going with me to the Jam for Duane but cancelled at the last minute (had to work). Johnny had a heart attack last Tues. Doctors say he has emphasemia, diabetes, pneumonia. He's been unconcious since Wed. morning. Lost his insurance when our local steel mill shut down last year. He's one of 2 people I know who knew Duane socially. I'm probably the oldest person here 'cept Dog (54) and I see those damn cigarette wreak havoc on more and more lives. Don't kid yourself--you reap what you sow. We're hoping Johnny pulls thru. Doesn't look too good. And he faces bankrupcy if he makes it. Damn cigarettes. On another, brighter note, best wishes to an old Crimson Tider, Coach Mike Davis, and his Hoosiers tonight.
