I prefer the ABB any day to any other band in the world. The Dead were never my favorite, by a long shot. But I’ve been to lots of Dead shows and the fans are the greatest people and I love their music. But when I need something a little higher for my soul it has always been the ABB that fills that void.
Listening to each band for as much as I have some things have come through. IMHO the GD and the ABB in their own ways strive for the same effect. The music is supposed to take us somewhere way beyond our daily reality. After a concert by either band I leave with a fresh sense of the world – everything seems more tolerable and life is easier. Gone is the stain of daily reality. Sure, each band takes its own path but they both take me to pretty much the same place. Same mountain - different trails.
There isn’t a Phil fan I know who doesn’t love Warren with the same intensity we do. Most of them have heard little of his work with the ABB, or Mule for that matter. When I turn them on they are amazed and are instant fans (the same way I was when I first heard the ABB). They want to climb that mountain too – and finding a new way to get there excites them to no end.
So my .02 on the matter is we are all brothers and sisters in spirit, but maybe not in our chosen path to the summit. I really don’t care how I get there – I just need to climb the mountain now and then. We should welcome Phil’s fans the way we welcome each other and celebrate the fact that they are there for the same thing we are. It’s also a great opportunity for those of us who haven’t climbed the mountain Phil’s way to sit back and give it a try. It’s great that in four hours I get to climb the mountain twice!
Someone once said this was supposed to be all about peace and love.
