good morning all.
just wanted to report that hipsters "of a certain age" can still do 2 shows in one night!
miss EJ and i met up with johnwott and we drove/trained to gov't mule downtown on pennsylvania ave. in a weird time of politics (particularly for those left of center), it was a stunning visual to watch and listen to GM wail with the illuminated capitol bldg. in the background. a very "standard" mule set with "sneaking sally thru' the alley", "to love somebody", and some prince bits here and there. groovin' time had!
then the train to car to jaxx for dickey betts and GS. john went one way and EJ and i the other...he made the train, but we missed by about :30...we might've beaten the odds but...john O. missed blue sky, and steph missed high falls...those being the first two songs...
but the rest of the three hour show was worth the mad dash...no ramblin' man but many of the other tunes old and new that make DB a rock legend. liz, donna maria, some nice slide on the johnson stuff, southbound was seriously jammed...the hoped for haynes appearance didn't happen
dickey betts played his heart out and his ass off. i have decided that toler is a bad-ass, whew!...for some reason as i enjoyed the show, i kept thinking indirectly of bbking...mr betts as a bandleader, that distintive guitar sound, great standards...maybe not so indirectly on "sweet little angel"...just wonderful guitar playing from mr. betts.
thanks to johnwott for the guidework, the brats, and the FX...even if he does hang around with a motorcycle gang. great to see terriB, sari (who introduced us to bassist dave stoltz - nice cat), benjamin, timhudson, fred, FT, and those great tapers...sari and terri enjoyed their new "dancing partner" i'm sure
will be under the porch today...no calls or flash photography please!
