So me, Nicole and Zambi headed back to the Sleep Inn for some post-show festivities, and I think we could have just changed clothes and done it all over again right there. You know what it is like when you're so juiced up after a concert that you just can't sit still? That was us, my friends. In spite of the fact that this was our third show in three nights, there seemed to be no fatigue that I could see. Remarkable. We dropped Zambi at the Raleigh-Durham Airport the next morning and then embarked on the loooong drive back to Louisville. I have to say that the West Virginia Turnpike between the Virginia border and Charleston is an absolutely breathtaking stretch of road. Amazing scenery. My complaints about the weekend were few and insignificant. I didn't get a "Stand Back" or a "Stormy Monday," both of which were on my wish list. The ticket prices for the lawn were, I thought, pretty high: $28 in Atlanta, $38 in Charlotte and $33 in Raleigh. $38 seems like an awful lot of money for a spot on the grass. Likewise, $8 seems like an awful lot for a can for freakin' Icehouse. Because of these prices, I had to skip the Instant CD's, which was disappointing, but I'll just have to trust that some good audience recordings will make their way around. The lines getting into the venue in Charlotte were dreadfully long. But again, these are minor complaints to say the least, and all part of the concet experience. I was sorry that I didn't get to see more people--would have loved to have gotten some rap in with Hot 'Lanta Tim, Rob Johnson, Charlesinator, Ron E, Blue Fox Carol, Betty...the list goes on. But I did enjoy the Hell out of spending the time with the folks that I did see. Mostly I felt grateful at the end of my journey. Grateful to have the time, resources and good health to make trips like this. Grateful for the opportunity to get my sail out in the wind and see some of this wonderful land of ours. Grateful for Lana and Rowland, who have provided me with an outlet to meet and hang out with some truly fine human beings who just so happen to share my passion for kick-ass live music. Grateful to have a band for my listening pleasure that still sounds vital and still plays like it has something to prove. And especially grateful for Duane Allman, who got the ball rolling all those years ago, and whose spirit and vision is all around us on these remarkable nights of brotherhood and song. EAPFP .
