Sorry I'm coming late to the issue of kids and rude smokers/users at concerts, but a little parental judgement is in order here. I applaud Pam's decision to expose her daughter to live music and I, too, bring my kids to as many concerts as are appropriate for them. BUT, IMHO, a little girl has no business at a general admission show bound to attract smokers/stoners. I was glad she had earplugs, though! I just attended Gathering of the Vibes and was disturbed at how many kids were there among the freaks and stoners. Open drug use was everyehere, as expected. Many kids had no ear plugs, including at least one infant. I can only imagine the distress that baby experienced being pounded by such loud sonic bass. Very disturbing. I will attend Vibes again next year, but I would NEVER bring kids to a scene like that. Most kids I see at these shows look pretty bored or downright miserable, though happily Pam's daughter is an exception.
I take my children to civilized concert environments and, sadly, that does NOT include most ABB and related shows, though I will take my 12-year-old to an upcoming reserved seat/no smoking theater later this year to see Derek. We've seen McCartney, some fun oldies shows and a fair amount of jazz. I know many of you disagree with my belief that ABB shows are not kid-friendly and your love of the music and desire to share it with your kids is admirable. It's an individual parental choice and that's my humble $.02.
