Bonaroo Day 2
What a day! Where do I start? At the beginning I guess.
Beautiful day, was suppose to rain but never did! Lots of sun and shade, mid 80s. Only took about an hour to get into the parking lot today. On the drive in we passed a bunch of real conservative religious people carrying crosses and signs that said Rock N Roll was the devils music. No kidding! One sign said Jimi, Jim and Janis all were burning in hell and we would too! Being Rastafarian, we knew something else would be burnin' too and thus were not deterred!
Walked in through the campgrounds and went down by the main stage. Saw Kirk and got our passes. Ran into Derek/Susan and Charlie, Jaimoe (and his younger brother and wife) and Doug Woody (Allen’s father). So good to see everyone! Jaimoe's brother has the same exact body shape as Jaimoe, for a minute I thought Jaimoe looked younger!
Listened to a wonderful set of Emmy Lou Harris and then went back by the press tent on our way to hear Robert Randolf. I'm listening to Derek answer a question and all of a sudden he looks up and says "that sounds like my wife singing with Robert Randolf." Sure enough, on the stage closest to the press tent Susan (with Charlie slung on her hip) is singing the Mavis Stapels hit I'll take you there! Later Susan tells us that Charlie said something into the microphone and the crowd responded, then he wanted to keep talking into the mic and it got funny! How many woman rockers have ever sung to a crowd of 50,000 with a 1.5 yr old on their hip? How cool is that?!
Back to the press conf: Someone ask each of the panel (Gregg Allman, Mike Gordon, ?, Derek Trucks) who they would like to see inducted into the Rock & N Roll Hall of Fame? Derek says the Sun Ra Orchestra. Gregg says Widespread, Mike Gordon says Leo Kottke and the guy whose name I do not know says Tenacious D!
After the press conf. the ABB do a picture session and then Derek gets interviewed by CNN.
Robert R. finishes up a great set and the ABB is on next with the biggest crowd of the event so far (75,000 est.). Our heros knock em dead! I mean absolutely deliver like the legends they are! Started off with Ain't Wastin' Time, Statesboro Blues, High Cost, then not sure of the order but - Woman Across the River, Desdemona, No One left to Run With, Soulshine, Midnight Rider, Rockin' Horse, One Way Out and they finished with Dreams, Whippin' Post and Layla. You should have heard the crowd explode with the encore!!! Reminded me of the Beacon! Still get tears in my eyes when Derek plays that slide.
Widespread was the last act we saw and I really enjoyed their show. I've been seeing them since the mid eighties but this is the first time without Mikey. They are still a great, great band and played a lot of new tunes from Ball and a number of chestnuts. Warren sat in,what a crowd favorite!
The spray paint booth action was still going strong! These ladies are not shy! Do I hear a request for franchise information?
Well, time for bed...got to get up early to go to church with Warren tomorrow!
