I let them go the last time, I won't this time. My mother passed in November of last year. She had used AOL for a time and had set her account up to automatically deduct her monthly bill from her checking account. In the settlement of her estate, I contacted AOL in early December to close her account. We received a final bill from them stating the deduction from the bank account and encouraging us to use the free two months of AOL access they had given us. The following January, I received another bill in the mail. Calling them, I was informed that reactivating the account would cost me no additional charges. I informed them that there would indeed be no additional charges as the account was closed, and furthermore expected a credit to my mother's bank account in the amount deducted as there had been no usage of said closed account by us or by my mother who was now two months passed. In April, after getting the required paperwork, I was at my mother's bank finalizing and closing accounts only to discover that AOL had again billed my mother's account for for use neither by us or her. Another phone call was made, another reactivation offer was proffered, another refusal, and another demand to credit the account, which was done that same day. Today, I got ANOTHER final notice from AOL, with an attendant threat to send the matter to collections. After threatening to hire as many attorneys as possible, I was assured that the matter has been cleared up once and for all. I have my doubts. I also have two free months of f*cking AOL access. Again. I encourage any and all that make use of these bastards to quit them as soon as possible before they suck every penny they can from you or your dead relatives.
