GW: Warren, has that "replacing-a-legend" thing been difficult for you to overcome? WARREN HAYNES: I'm constantly drawing the line of how much I should sound like Duane. For the music to be true to itself, I have to insert a certain amount of Duane's sound and the more I play that way the more it sounds like the Allman Brothers Band. It definitely makes it harder to be myself on guitar, but the more comfortable I am within the band, the more I'm able to stretch out, and the more my own style comes to the fore. BETTS: And you have to understand something: Warren is not replacing a legend. A legend was killed over 20 years ago. And that was the end of that. Nobody's gonna replace Duane. We're not replacing anybody. We're just going on to the next day. my point in posting this small part of a GuitarWorld interview with dickey and warren- "www.guitarworld.com" is to make my apologies to the GB. days ago, i posted some "drivel" on how the current ABB is not "like the band of old". i do, as stated in my posts- "miss dickey". i lay awake at night and wonder what the ABB would sound like with "dickey and warren and derek". but, alas, that is not meant to be. i ran across dickey's quote- "highlighted above" and suddenly realized, to my shock and amazement- that what dickey said years ago is applicable to the band today. stay with me here, lololol!!! dickey said that warren is not replacing a legend, that was the end of that, nobody's gonna replace Duane (to paraphrase his quote). dickey also said "we're not replacing anybody. we're just going on to the next day". my flash of realization was- "this current 2003 ABB is "also not replacing anybody" and that the current ABB is "just going on to the next day". with that in mind- i re-listened to "HTN", not as someone that knows the ABB since 1969 but as a brand new "virgin". and it was like listening to the very first album for the very first time way back in 1969. i got chills up and down my spine. i realized that i was "holding onto old times" and wishing they were still current times. i still miss dickey. when i die and arrive in "heaven" i will be able to see the ABB as it should be- with Duane and Berry and Dickey and Warren and Derek and Alan and Lamar and Lowell George and many many others,,,,, but i digress here,,,,,lololol Dickey, long live Dickey, please Gregg and Butch find it in your heart to invite Dickey back, if not into the band, for a couple of well publicized dates, but Dickey in his own words told the truth- to paraphrase Dickey's interview statement, quoted above- "we (the ABB) don't replace anybody, we (the ABB) just go onto the next day". please remember our troops in your thoughts and prayers. for that matter, please remember "all of us" in your thoughts and prayers.
