So, let me tell you another tale of my good buddy Scotty and his adventures. About 2 days before Derek got to California, Scotty called me at work to tell me that he was taking his own car to the gig in Long Beach. Now Scotty's office is .6 miles from the venue so I had to ask why.
"Well, cause I want to take my surfboard to the show so I can get a pic of Derek holding it."
Now, since a lot of you don't know Scotty, this hairbrain scheme might sound crazy, but to me it almost made sense. Scotty has this surfboard that he calls the "Mushroom Express". It has a mural drawn on it of the Allman Brothers Dobro Mushroom. (It is pretty cool).
So, needless to say, I gave Scotty a real hard time. I told him that the band was going to think he is stalker fan. I also dubbed him "Super Groupie". With all my hazing, Scotty didn't bring the surfboard into the venue. "Wheeew."
Well, we sit through soundcheck, wrap with the whole band, the whole time, I am worried that surfer boy is going to break out the Mushroom Express. But he didn't.
Fast forward an hour. The opening band comes on and Scotty disappears. It really doesn't bother me that much, cause we are all drinking on Scotty's tab. Then after about an hour, I start to worry, so I head out into the parking lot to search for my fallen travel partner. Maybe he has wandered out to the beach and taken an nap with the very populated vagrant community of Long Beach.
As I exit the bar, I look over to the bands bus and there in all it's glory is the "Mushroom Express". Scotty ran to his car, and grabbed his board and his camera and has proceeded to get Derek and Todd to pose with his board.
This is why I love Scotty. No task is too big. He wanted the pic and would not stop till he got it. Derek and Todd thought it was awesome. In fact when I went over to talk to Todd after the show, Scotty rolls up with me and Todd calls Scotty, "The Surfer Dude." I thought that there was noone on Earth that could love these bands in the extended family more than me. Damn if I wasn't wrong.
Scotty took 2 rolls of film that night and another roll on Friday night. This was the Derek Trucks Band on a week night in our town. Can you imagine what this guy has planned for The Allman Brothers Band in NYC while on vacation? Watch out.
If you see a guy strollin' through Manhattan with a pair of Ski's with a Peach Truck painted on it. Stop and say hi. It might be Scotty.
