10 years ago today, I was walking around downtown Manhattan shortly after noon. The energy in the air changed as black smoke leaked from beneath the World Trade Center and strings of coughing people were being spit from the exits. I was amazed that only 6 people had perished after a truck full of explosives drove without resistance into the underground parking garage and blew. Boy were we lucky! Out of thousands, only 6 were killed. Whew. Those terrorists can't touch us. Ha! Bunch of bozos. Only 6. I mean that really could have been tragic. Hundreds could have been killed but nope...only 6.
Only.
I can't tell you how this word bothers me today. *Only* 6 people. Had we paid closer attention to the message those lost lives tried to deliver, maybe...just maybe...those two towers would still be reaching for the sky today.
I hope, today, the families of those first victims can forgive us for the lack of respect we showed when this happened. I hope they can accept sympathy and condolences from those of us who were guilty of thinking in an "only 6" frame of mind.
Their loved ones are heroes, too. They tried to warn us of a darker day to come. We didn't hear them.
