I attended the first two nights and wanted to give my thoughts to this very educated music crowd. Opening night was a good show. Middle of the pack for the many shows I've seen at the Beacon, Orpheum, and Great Woods. The show had peaks and valleys. AWTNM was simply great. Watching and Hearing Warren play Hendrix live is always special and Rain was an interesting choice (I'd trade both in for Sailin' and Instrumental Ill, or one crazy blusey Desdemona.
At times, it looked like an extended practice--which for these grandmasters is something special. Derek stepped up when needed and Warren is, well, WARREN.
The second night was very different. In my top 5 of all time (above the first night with Clapton--sorry folks, it was musically better), better than last year's final show when Greg fell ill, better than the 35th An Evening with the Allman Bros. which kicked butt, etc. I thought someone's head in the front row was going to explode. They played the meanest Liz Reed I've ever heard live. It was simply nasty. I highly recommend it--absolutely incredible. The Why Love has to be sad in the second set was upbeat and Derek's work was textbook. Warren's slide on Dreams reminded me of the early Beacon shows when they were touring on Where it All Begins. Teh Whipping Post was pounding. The whole show was relentless and IMHO one of the best (and certainly better than opening night). This was a night for the true hardcore fan and even better for the neophyte who came with me and couldn't believe it. It was just one of those: we have a couple of days off, I'm in the mood to play nights. Wow, that Liz Reed was something--check it out. Trust the Dr.!
