Lefty just called me with the saddest news. Birmingham musician, Matt Kimbrell passed away this morning from a heart attack. Matt is the brother of Oteil and the Peacemakers guitarist, Mark Kimbrell. Matt and Mark are the sons of a musician and have been playing professionally since their teenage years. Matt could play virtually any instrument. Matt recorded his own album about 20 years ago. Aside from a solo by Mark, Matt played every instrument on every track. Matt played in bands as diverse as Bare Trees (mid 1970's with brother Mark), the legendary punk outfit, Jim Bob and the Leisure Suits (with Matt as the Jim Bob character), with the uptown C&W act, the Big City Wranglers (some of you saw them at Donna and my birthaversary party a few years ago), and upscale blues with the Erin Mitchell Band (occasionally with Mark on guitar). Aside from being a very accomplished musician, Matt was typically the life of any party or gathering. He seemed to always have a joke, a funny story or just a hearty laugh to add to any conversation. I ask all residents of the Hittin the Note community to keep Mark Kimbrell in your thoughts and prayers today. Mat and Mark had just recently lost their mother, so this has to be extremely painful for Mark. As I hear more news, I will keep you all posted. I am shocked and saddened by this news. "Rusty"
