Saw Lefty, David and Matt Saturday night at Moe's! Another off- the hook night! I hope this one continues to blossom - could be this site's next super group!
Before catching Lefty, David and Matt - Donna, BA and my self caught another incredible act at Marty's bar (Birmingham's southside).
BLUE GALAXY is pretty much a classical string ensemble. Local drummer extraordinaire Michael Glaser anchors the group that features violinists Sue Nuckols and Melanie Rodgers; viloaist, Niamh Clarke; bassist/composer Abe Becker and cellist, Clay McKinney.
These folks play some very interesting arrangements of some very interesting selections.
Their setlist included "Gimme Some Lovin" (S. Winwood), "Take On Me" (a-ha), "Purple Haze" (Hendrix", "And She Was" (Talking Heads), "And You and I" (Yes), "Take 5" (Brubeck), "Kashmir" (Zep) - several Radio Head tunes - and a bunch of songs that you'd never expect to hear in the same set by the same band anywhere, anytime.
Members of the group are musicians with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. This is a part-time project for them and they only play at several events per year.
They have a few other shows coming up. I'll keep them posted for benefit of my fellow Birminghamsters.
