Guys, no fighting. Play nice.
Here's my 2 cents for what's it's worth regarding Dickey and how he's evolved. I remember going to Carnegie Hall a short time after Duane passed. I was so ecstatic that the band was going to carry on. I knew what sounded good to me...not much else. Still don't. When they started off with Statesboro Blues, as was their standard at the time, I remember skipping down the aisle (had gone to the ladies room at the wrong time, as usual) and then stopping dead in my tracks. Dickey could, in no way, get anywhere close to Duane's opening slide. When Ain't Wastin Time No More became their opening number a few years down the road, it was a little bit of a let down (I'm a creature of habit), but it no longer put the onus on Dickey to try to play the way Duane could.
That was then and this is now. Dickey has grown tremendously as a guitarist since then; his slide is sublime. But, still, nobody can touch Duane, even today.
And every time my cell phone rings, it's the opening licks to Layla and I am constantly reminded that this is Duane who came up with the notes, hit the note and that's that.
Comparing Dickey and Eric is like comparing apples and peaches.
Have a wonderful Friday all. I'll be around all weekend, hope some of you will too.
