Whoa!!! Hold up for 1 second on this Dickey vs. Eric thing. First off, this is the ABB's website, so I should expect the responses I'm reading. Secondly, these guys are both Hall of Famers and one of a kind on a 6 string. However, is everyone forgetting about a band called CREAM? Listen to EC's solos on live versions of "Crossroads," "Deserted Cities," or "Politician" again. As far as songwriting goes, Dickey is in a league of his own - no one creates a melody like him, but as for fly by the seat of your pants soloing - EC was the trailblazer. I recall reading an article in which Dickey said the 2 guitarists he cannot listen to much anymore were EC & Jerry, because he found himself playing too much like them if he did. Also, let's be honest, in the last 10 yrs. you may have witnessed a rough performance or two (or three) from Dickey, whereas Clapton over that same stretch may not have blown you away, he was consistently solid and you probably never witnessed a trainwreck. I do realize Clapton's trainwreck period was in the 70's, but it was definitely over in less than 10yrs. This is a chocolate vs. vanilla debate (or is it apples vs. oranges?) I must be bored to be offering an opinion! Just enjoy both geniuses and their body of work. As many of us heard last Saturday at Crossroads, our guitar heroes will not keep it together forever (ex.- Johnny Winter, B.B.), so go see the Jeff Becks, Robin Trowers, ECs, Dickeys that are still performing at a high level as they age. Unfortunately, time will catch up and we won't hear their screaming guitars in person anymore.
