Billy, I'd say style of playing and type of music are 1a and 1b for me. The rest of the things you mention are factors as well, but they are further down the list and can be overlooked if 1a and b are there. For example Dickey is one of my favorites, as someone mentioned yesterday his tone has gone through many changes through the years, I was not a big fan of it during the years he was playing the Fender so much ('97-'99). I thought it sounded tin-y, overwound, dull, and hollow, mostly in comparison to the amazing tone he had when Warren was in the band...full, clear, warm, and bright. That said I still loved to go to the shows and hear him play, and I still enjoy listening to the recordings because I love the music and his style of playing. Heck even Warren's tone has changed through the years, I prefer the tone he displayed during his first stint w/ the Brothers, particularly around the time of the Where it All Begins album, I really love his sound on that album. Even since 2001 his tone has changed, it is actually getting closer back to the sound in '93/'94 but it is not quite the same. Ryan
