Headline: Ludlow Garage tribute in the works
By Mike Boyer
The Cincinnati Enquirer (Ohio)
The Ludlow Garage will live again in sound and memory with a special tribute stage at this year's Cincy Blues Fest next month and the issue of a three-disc-CD set of remastered live performances. Both will mark the 40th anniversary of the historic rock venue.
Former Cincinnati vice mayor Jim Tarbell, who ran the club that operated from 1969 to 1971, said proceeds from the CD set, a poster and t-shirt commemorating the anniversary will benefit the Cincy Blues Society, which hosts the annual festival, and Gary Burbank's Play it Forward fund to help musicians facing unexpected medical bills.
The CD set (about $25) will include 48 tracks from 16 different groups including the Allman Brothers, B.B. King, Taj Mahal, Santana and others.
"We held a 25th reunion at the Seasongood Pavilion featuring some of the musicians who performed at the club," said Tarbell, "And I kept getting calls from people wanting to know when we were going to do more."
The club, sometimes called the "Fillmore of the Midwest," became famous when the Allman Brothers Band issued its "Live at Ludlow Garage" album in 1970. The CD set will include 48 tracks from 16 different groups including the Allman Brothers, B.B. King, Taj Mahal, Santana and others.
Tarbell said, "We recorded virtually all the performances, but we never did anything with them."
