Today is a very sad day. Amidst errands, etc., I made my weekly stop at Record Theatre which is my local indie record shop. I went through the outer door and as I pushed on the inner door, it was locked. I looked up and saw unfamiliar faces, empty bins and general disorder. An older gentleman looked at me expressionless as he continiued about his business. I stepped back and looked at a sign on the outer door that read; "This store is now closed, please visit our other locations at....." My heart fell. This store is 5 miles from home. The "other locations" are 25 miles away. I patronize them if I'm in that area, but that is rather infrequently. The next closest stores now are 10 miles away and they are FYE, Barnes & Noble and Borders....all big box, top 40 retailers. I stopped at my local indie store at least once a week, and perused the new release bins as well as searched for whatever tickled my fancy that particular week. The new release whiteboard listed Mott the Hoople Live as being released on the 21st, and I was headed in to get that and browse around as I tend to do. Alas, no more. Now I will be relegated to on-line purchases or the chance happening upon another indie store when on the road travelling. This is a sad day.
